- Score a whole set from the grid in a minute, then read only the rationales you missed.
- Keep it in a separate folder so you can work the packet honestly.
A four-week run at it
If you have less time, do weeks 1 and 4 and drill Quiz Mode in between.
Week 1 · Frame it
- Read Answer Patterns end to end. It reframes every other page.
- Read the five competencies in the Cheatsheet — the framework is the only document that specifies what is measured.
- Do one official scenario set in Practice and read every rationale, including for the items you got right.
Week 2 · Own the writing
- Memorize the claim → evidence → reasoning → role block from the Playbook.
- Write Assignment 1 cold against the clock, then score it against Rubric #1 yourself.
- Watch a classroom video and write the four-component analysis in 70 minutes.
Week 3 · Close the law gap
- Law & Ops is 16 of Part Two's 26 selected-response items. Work the timelines until they are automatic.
- Run the legal-timelines and finance-ops decks in Quiz Mode until you clear them twice.
- Do the 46 operations/legal items in Practice.
Week 4 · Simulate
- Full timed Part One, then a separate day for Part Two. Sit them on different days if you can.
- Re-read Answer Patterns and the distractor checklist the night before.
- Skim the Day-Of Game Plan, set out your documents, and stop.
Three things worth knowing before you register

It runs in windows, not year-round
Most NYSTCE tests are available any week. SBL is not: it is offered by appointment inside testing windows of about two to three weeks, roughly five times a year. Miss one and the next is typically two to three months out, so work backward from a window when you plan.
The old "pay to extend" rule is gone
Since Aug 2, 2023 an Initial SBL certificate can be reissued up to twice, five years each. Applications can't be filed more than six months before expiry. Any notes saying "extend three years then retake the tests" are out of date.
The 2013 version is retired
Tests 107/108 were retired as of Sept 2, 2025 — but their pages, framework and sample items are still live on the NYSTCE site and easy to download by mistake. Everything here is keyed to the Revised (May 2019) assessment, Fields 109 and 110.

This site is offered free to anyone preparing for the New York School Building Leader assessment. Use it, print it, put it on a shared drive for your cohort, or fork the whole thing. It is independent — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or reviewed by NYSED, the NYSTCE program, Pearson or Evaluation Systems.
Content marked official comes from NYSED/NYSTCE published preparation materials; everything else is practitioner-written and should be read as informed opinion, not as an answer key from the test maker.
